In the Baltic Sea resort of Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom, a moose caused a stir on Tuesday. The animal swam in the sea for hours in front of hundreds of onlookers before rescuers were able to bring it ashore.

The drama began at around 10 a.m. when passers-by spotted the elk in the water. They alerted the fire brigade, who arrived with the DLRG and the police. Together, they tried to lure the animal ashore, but it swam further and further out to sea.

For hours, the moose swam up and down the beach, its head only occasionally visible above the water. The animal seemed weakened and exhausted. Finally, at around 4 p.m., rescuers managed to get a rope around its neck and bring it ashore.

The moose was taken to a nearby animal shelter, where it was examined by a veterinarian. The animal is said to be in a stable condition.

It is still unclear how the moose got into the sea. According to experts, it is possible that the moose swam across the Swine River from Poland to the island of Usedom.
