Matrona Nikonova, also known as Matushka Matrona, was a Russian Orthodox saint who lived from 1881 to 1952. She was born in the village of Sebino, Tula Oblast, Russia, to a poor peasant family.

Early Life and Miracles

Matrona was born blind and unable to walk. Despite her disabilities, she exhibited extraordinary spiritual gifts from a young age. She could reportedly see the future, heal the sick, and cast out demons.

As a child, Matrona often spent her days in prayer and meditation. She became known for her humility, kindness, and compassion, and people from all over Russia would come to seek her guidance and prayers.

Life in Moscow

In 1925, Matrona moved to Moscow, where she lived in a small apartment with her elder sister. She continued to receive visitors and provide spiritual guidance, despite the persecution of the Orthodox Church by the Soviet government.

During World War II, Matrona became a source of hope and encouragement for many who had lost loved ones or were suffering from the hardships of war. She is said to have predicted the outcome of the war and comforted those who were grieving.

Death and Sainthood

Matrona died on May 2, 1952, at the age of 71. She was buried in the Danilov Monastery in Moscow, and her grave quickly became a place of pilgrimage for the faithful.

In 1999, Matrona was canonized as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church. Her relics are now enshrined in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, where they continue to draw millions of pilgrims each year.
